A May 2012 poll commissioned by the Shuttleworth campaign revealed some shocking results:
Jim Moran – 19%
Bruce Shuttleworth – 16%
Undecided – 65%
Maybe local rank-and-file Democrats are willing to give Shuttleworth a look, even if the Virginia Democrat elites, like the Democratic Party of Virginia and the 8th District Democratic Committee, won’t. Granted, the poll was commissioned by the campaign, so its credibility is unknown. But unless the poll was a total sham, it looks like ordinary Democrats who are tired of being embarrassed by Moran but wouldn’t vote for a Republican alternative are wanting to find out more about Shuttleworth. That spells big trouble for Moran: a 21-year incumbent who has consistently gotten 60% of the vote in the general election can’t get a commitment from even 20% of primary voters.
